General Information

  • Be careful how much information you share with people too quickly on your mobile device
    • Many online predators are looking for a way to misuse information that you give them for personal or financial gain.
  • Sending pornographic messages or “sexting” does not indicate a healthy friendship / relationship
  • Trusting friendships and relationships should invoke trust and respect for one another and private information
    • If there are people or “friends” taking the information that you have shared with them in private and telling others, they are not acting like a true friend.
  • Private information, in the hands of the wrong person, can be used for issues of control:
    • Some will use information to control you and convince you to harm yourself and others.
  • Sexual activity with adults is illegal and this includes mobile phone communication
    • People that try to talk to you in this way are creepy and weird – stay away.

In the United States, the age for consent to sexual activity with an adult ranges from 16 – 18 by state.  Check your state laws for those that apply to you.  In general, someone older giving you attention can make you feel good.  If this person seems creepy or weird in anyway, stop the friendship immediately.


Harassment

Don’t let someone harass or bother you with random and frequent calling or texting.  Tell someone close to you about it and get it resolved immediately.

Resolving Mobile Phone Harassment

  • Dont Answer The Calls or Texts
  • Save Inappropriate Messages No Matter How Upsetting
  • Show a Safe Adult and Law Enforcement:
  • Do NOT be the one to initiative conversation, even if it is to tell them how the conversations have upset you
  • Create a Plan With A Safe Adult and Stay Calm.  Most importantly, do NOT give them the reaction they are looking for or let them know they are bothering you.  This may be just what they want.
  • Get a New Mobile Phone Number

Do NOT let yourself feel scared or threatened at any time with mobile phone conversations.  Let an adult know so that the police can be called or call the police yourself.  What they are doing is a CRIME!


Safe Texting

  • Enjoy texting on your mobile phone as recreation – do NOT let them control you
  • Respect EVERYONE with your text messages – harassment is a CRIME!
  • NEVER send nude pics of you or another person with your mobile phone (or by any other means) – this is called “sexting”
  • Allow your friends and family time to respond to texts
  • Separate recreation & texting time from family time.  Do not text during dinner, movies, and family nights, etc. where it would be rude.
  • Do not text people late at night to keep them awake
  • Put your mobile device away during some hours of the day
  • Tell a safe adult about any text messages that you feel are exploitive, rude, inappropriate, or negative.
  • Spend time with your friends in person.  By ONLY texting, you only get to know part of them!
